I might have assumed that our civilization is far more advanced than those that flourished 6,000 or even 9,000 years ago. But after spending some time this month walking among the ancient stone circles on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides—where there are many—I found myself deeply moved by the extraordinary effort our ancestors devoted to honoring the celestial cycles. They created immense stone calendars that tracked the movements of the Sun and Moon, the solstices, and even eclipses with remarkable precision.

The immense labor required to erect these monuments was devoted not to conquest or commerce, but to the careful observation of the heavens. These great circles served as living calendars, marking the dance of the Sun and Moon, the turning of the solstices, and even the mysterious rhythm of eclipses. They reveal a people whose lives were woven into the fabric of the cosmos, whose days and years were measured by the movements of the celestial bodies overhead.

Perhaps their greatest achievement was not the stones themselves, but the consciousness they embodied—a culture that understood its place within the greater order of the universe. Standing among those ancient circles, I could not help but wonder whether we have gained technology while losing a sacred relationship with time.

These monuments speak of a people who aligned the rhythms of daily life with the rhythms of the cosmos, shaping their year around the great celestial events unfolding overhead. Standing among those stones, I couldn’t help but feel that they possessed a profound relationship with time and nature that we have largely forgotten.

On this Solstice I want to take a moment of reflection and silence to honor those cultures in the ancient world. I find myself longing for a civilization that once honored those rhythms—a world in which our lives are measured not only by clocks and calendars and endless appointments and zoom calls, but by the enduring cycles of the stars.
